My interpretation of USDT over lighthing news, correct me if I’m wrong in my logic:

Pros:

- Cheaper fees for USDT transfers. People who rely on USDT benefit.

- More value brought onto the lightning network

- Ultimately more value and liquidity ochain as it’s easier to move on the same blockchain over different ones

- LESS value for the other shitcoin chains. Now that they dont’ facilitate USDT, what’s the point of them?

- Better privacy over wide open chains.

- Off-chain - no need to wait at all if there were any wait times to begin with (I don’t know because I don’t use it).

Cons:

- Has USDT verified reserves? If not, this is a liability

- Potential for increased regulatory scrutiny and targetting

- More attention to lightning network enabled privacy if there is any

Net: probably a good thing - saying it cautiously.

Curious what you think?

Cons: only one wallet supports it non custodialy which is IOS only and in beta.

I'm not sure how others implementations can support TARO so no compatibility with LDK / Eclair Wallets and others which limit the interest of it.

Stable Coins are centralized entities at the opposite of protocols, so their economical weight could potentially be a threat to Bitcoin in the future concerning "governance" choices / consensus changes

you forgot one thing: KYC for nodes that are "carrying" tether shit over their liquidity....

Are there non-kyced nodes now? If you bought via exchange and started a node, aren’t you already kyc’ed?

Someone brought up that it would make laundering cash into bitcoin easier because of some sort of peg issue

How

I'm a dummy but this sounds like a good summary imo

I think you nailed it. I have no use for it but it is the preferred medium of exchange in large parts of the global south without access to dollar liquidity. I understand why folks hate tether and I would not use it but to say we shouldn’t have it because of x reason, is just sitting on a high horse much of the world cannot afford to sit on unfortunately.

One consideration is that everyone who wants to use USDT on Lightning needs to have at least one dedicated channel for that purpose with the needed liquidity. That means additional fees for channel setup and maintenance and you need the LSP and swap provider infrastructure for it.
