On this day 82 years ago on 8 September 1941, the German military cut the last remaining road the city of Leningrad had to the outside world. What followed was 872 days of heroic resistance by Soviet citizens but also unbearable hunger, despair, and cruelty as 1.5 million people died before the blockade was finally lifted on January 27, 1944.
