Three instances of nostrcheck running on different #thenostr users servers πŸ’œ

My part of the deal is done, just need some clients to take a chance on NIP96 and the magic is done.

For those who don't know, NIP96 allows you to add and remove media servers in a similar way as we do now with relays. Nostrcheck server can be installed in your home server to be sovereign of your data (with all its potential, NIP05, lightning redirections, multimedia hosting, etc).

I think this is something very necessary for the protocol. What would happen if tomorrow one of the existing media providers closes down? We cannot leave this centralized.

mind elaborating on nip96?

The NIP standardizes the communication between client and media servers. It allows to publish a URL with the data of your server and any client nostr must have a list (similar to relay) to add them, delete them, etc.

See, for example the URL of nostrcheck.me

https://nostrcheck.me/api/v2/nip96

Here is the draft of the NIP, it is already well worked out among many people:

definitely good2know and also many running ipfs can possibly integrate with local nostrcheck instance

decentralize media server !!! πŸ§…πŸ“‘

Of course, and I also believe that other installable servers like nostrcheck should emerge so as not to depend only on my project. I imagine a future with thousands of multimedia servers with different instances of different software competing to be the best.

I think this, besides being necessary, is disruptive for the protocol. I believe in it and I will not stop until I get it or the #thenostr’s CEO kicks me out πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

What are the minimum requirements for server? Should it be always online or it is possible to host it on a personal computer and start when we will connect to Nostr?

The server uses very few resources, except when processing videos (it uses ffmpeg). In general with 2-4 GB of ram and 50GB of space should be enough for a long time (3-4 years of data). Nostrcheck.me now hosts 40.000 pictures and videos and the data usage is about 9GB.

You can stop the server, but your multimedia files will not be available to others, your notes with images or videos will not be seen (unless you use something like cloudflare, in its free version).

nostr:npub1h0rnetjp2qka44ayzyjcdh90gs3gzrtq4f94033heng6w34s0pzq2yfv0g the multimedia relay is also trying to solve this issue. But with the ability to synchronise and verify the data accross different relays. A #Nostr native solution.

The approach is different, I'm not sure about saving images in a database.

Anyway, I haven't checked exactly how it works, so I may be assuming things that are not true.

I will check it out
