My 2 cents as someone that joined recently:
- Apps are not there yet, even the best ones are unfinished and unpolished
- Too much emphasis on the micro-blogging format, it's been done to death; satellite.earth is the only reason I'm still here (maybe that's just me)
- Seeing content arrive through web sockets in real time is a huge turn off. No clients really implement any sort of local caching, it slows apps down horrendously, etc.
- Some apps don't share the same relays, so you have people landing on network islands.
- The fucking crypto spam bots, holy shit. Spam in general is a major problem the platform hasn't really figured out yet.
- Most of the content on the platform is currently about the platform. The platform should be invisible.
I'm still here and I like it, but I'm an enthusiast. Most average people will not make it this far.
