What can #nostr (we) do to improve user retention? #asknostr

Keep their attention. and remain creative and diverse. I think before they get confused or lost! 💡

Topic variety.

- #Bitcoin talk is everywhere and can get boring fast.

- In fact, tag-muting is a feature I think is very needed.

- There was a lot of talk about onboarding lately - if a user is put in a neat environment from the getgo, it helps a lot if said environment can flourish easily.

- Less spam, more clarity. Primal is doing a great job there nowadays (after quite a... situation... xD), so I think this will help.

Just my spontaneous thoughts o.o

I totally agree on the need for more self-moderation and timeline customisation tools or filters. We recently also chatted about user-enabled algos to create, for example, a "family friendly" timeline with a single click or, like you mentioned, hide specific tags or topics.

Of course we can already customise our feeds thanks to projects like listr but that's power user stuff way beyond the horizon of a new nostrich user who's coming over from legacy social media. Perhaps some apps could consider adding certain predefined (and editable lists) in the account creation process allowing new users to customise their feed from the get go and then already feed them content of their interest to their timeline.

If we're honest.. the average nostr experience for a new person is pretty mediocre until the start adding contacts to their profile. So by allowing content select grouped in lists (foodstr, artstr, gamestr, footstr, burgerstr etc) the might be receiving a better first impression from the beginning?

Most important cause is the #Bitcoin buzz. Ordinary people don’t like this much.

Don't talk only about #Bitcoin or zapps.

It gets a bit silly, actually.

My 2 cents as someone that joined recently:

- Apps are not there yet, even the best ones are unfinished and unpolished

- Too much emphasis on the micro-blogging format, it's been done to death; satellite.earth is the only reason I'm still here (maybe that's just me)

- Seeing content arrive through web sockets in real time is a huge turn off. No clients really implement any sort of local caching, it slows apps down horrendously, etc.

- Some apps don't share the same relays, so you have people landing on network islands.

- The fucking crypto spam bots, holy shit. Spam in general is a major problem the platform hasn't really figured out yet.

- Most of the content on the platform is currently about the platform. The platform should be invisible.

I'm still here and I like it, but I'm an enthusiast. Most average people will not make it this far.

The issue with onboarding is the high barrier to entry in my opinion.

Figuring out relays, who to follow (and how to find their npub/nip5) are too difficult. I have seen external guides but we shouldn’t be giving links to users as they might not click them.

This really needs to be done on the client level as an introduction/walkthrough, but the process still needs to be simplified further.

Notice how the biggest drop is always within the first few days

Very well said, thank you!

I think the devs need more power users who were not involved in the development and try their stuff out from a clueless state.

A lot of the stuff the write is really confusing and it's like... please explain this to me, like I'm wearing a mask alone in a car.

I've already given my opinion about this, but I've been stoned by the villagers and was threatened to be burned like a witch, 3x. People never wanted to hear the truth, always deviating from the facts, never focusing on the issues

They only want to hear the good things that one has to say about #nostr

Are we filtering out single use identities in this?

No I did not. I just took the graph as is.

I’d imagine tracking unique Nostr users is basically impossible. Which identities, which relays, etc

Ouch. I think the biggest thing is find people to connect with that are actually using it. I personally try to post daily and interact. Try to get non btc people on here but I think it is good of people suggest a follow.
