Yeah, that's why my engagement is often way higher than my follower count would suggest. Some of us don't have lots of followers, but we have highly active ones. So we "feel" like we're more popular than we are.
That's a change from traditional social media, where your follower count correlates more closely to your engagement.

i for a fact know my follower count was tampered with bc of the huge spike it did alongside a select few others in a short short time span of 2-3 weeks

Everyone else has slowly been consistently rising for a year. But this is besides the point. My point is that it's a shitty metric that so many people are concerned with.

That's not what I meant. This note was created because of influencer talk in another thread. I was trying to show that these numbers don't mean all that much and better metrics exist.

The only relevant metric is zaps sent and zaps earned ..
Other platforms ( not protocols) report these weird metrics because they have no measure of real value ..
i totally agree.. ..what metrics do you think are [even] important? ..maybe just Posts/Replies counts would be enough? ..the profile details and the actual posts/replies content is all you really need to want to follow or not follow someone
These measures come from old social that has no means to report real value .. #zaps .. sooner you drop them ..better for the protocol ..
Real worth is number of zaps received / sent .. not the total value of zaps .. may be both !
Absent bots, follower count is a metric designed to show a coefficient of interesting behavior. If the crowd is looking in the same direction it could be one indicator of information worth knowing. This was Fame's original purpose. If you do great things (both terrible and honorable) others will know your name.
In short: Follower count= approximate intrigue. Not to be arbitrarily discarded.
