Based on the handful of schools I've taught at or otherwise been involved with across multiple countries, this is definitely true of most government and even private schools.
A handful of Catholic and IB World Schools will push students to move beyond rote memorization, but they seem to be few and far between. Naturally, the odd teacher at your government or private schools will challenge students, but standards are almost universally abysmal. The norm is, typically, to teach to teach to the lowest common denominator, who is often the weakest student who doesn't study and is often multiple levels behind the rest of his peers.

What do #plebs think about the Steiner-Waldorf method of education?

I think it is wonderful and inspires creativity, but it lacks the scientific method. My best friend attended waldorf k-12 and he really struggled with science at uni because it was much more rigorous than he had experienced. After learning it, he thought the scientific method gave a foundational lens through which one can interact, study, and understand the world. He thought it was so foundational to higher thought processes that he separated people into those who studied it and those who did not. I would do waldorf plus the scientific method maybe around age 10.

Certainly better than the education at state operated schools. My niece got accepted and will attend a Waldorf school starting with the new school year. In addition (at least in Germany) Waldorf schools do not try to force parents into vaccinating their children against a vast variety of child illnesses which pose literally ZERO risk to their life.

Right. The thing is we have "Schulpflicht" or "Compulsory schooling" for 9 years in Germany. If Waldorf hadn't taken my niece then my sister could have got be forced into vaccinating her daughter without her consent. So you cannot just say you're doing home schooling to protect your child. That's absolutely unakzeptable
Nein! Das ist verboten! 😅 and that's about the limit of my German. But in all seriousness, that's a really rough system 😬 so homeschooling is totally forbidden in Germany!?
From Google: "Homeschooling has been illegal since 1919. In very exceptional cases, you can take your child out of the education system and school them at home. You need to prove that attending school would cause the child unnecessary hardship. Only around 400 students across Germany are home schooled."
Even if you skip a day without a reasonable note from your parents or doctor's sick note, parents may get fines for their child skipping school days. Now, though there is no mandatory vaccinations in Germany they "basic" ones are required by law for school. Thus parents are being forced into vaccinating their children. Not because of any illness but through the compulsory schooling law.
Have a look at Montessori education, for me it looks like a good idea and we are thinking about it for our son.
Looks great. In some ways similar to Steiner and in many ways different. I had heard of it before but always assumed it was the same thing as Steiner. Unfortunately there's no Montessori schools anywhere near us. But there is a Steiner, so I guess our options are limited 🤷🏻♂️
