Does engagement on Nostr work better with using proper hashtags?

Well I do. So there's one piece of anecdotal evidence :)

I try to use relevant hashtags, simply because I look at how I search for stuff on here. I'll typically type a word and a hashtag for that word will show up, then I'll look at the posts for that hashtag.

same.... I'm doing my best to unlearn what I used to do on Twitter and mainstream socials ..
I like proper hashtag use, as I follow some hashtags. Some people spam their notes with unrelated hashtags and that muddy’s the water. Plus I have to do the extra step of muting those npubs lol.
yeah I'm guilty of that its a bad habit, I used to do that on Twitter and I've gotten better I've cought myself doing that and I'm getting better and not doing it but still work to do ...
need to unlearn the bad habits from mainstream social media
