I didn't see your question. The model S and X has a variable clearance, you can control it with the panel. In a model without adjustable clearance, its fixed at 5". I've bottomed out the car many times on ice and snow, but its just the battery pack and its just about indestructable. They have a front-wheel drive option, but I'd never waste my time with one of those. I have the AWD model, but because its electric and with antilock brakes it performs far better than 4WD or classical AWD. Its not exactly for mudding in the mountains, but its nimble enough to get around most problems on the road. The only time I was a little nervious was in the osarks of northern Arkansas where the road doubles as a streambed, but I ended up having no problem. When I brought my 1-ton Nissan though there, I actually got stuck. Several years ago there was flooding all around Minnesota and I (don't recommend it, but) actually drove through a flooded road and the water came up to the door mirrors but had no problems.
