Are there any historical examples of a country with a large, centralized government and high taxes, that *became* wildly successful/rich/powerful? As opposed to a successful country that began raising taxes and blowing its bureaucracy?

(I think I know the answer, but I’m trying to steel-man the position).

Also, some great philosophy here, nostr:npub1ndketdm2qyv35nrhsxzks8kh7w7w6tll4rjp29hv0qjqkgfjsh6snmgk2v nostr:npub1jt97tpsul3fp8hvf7zn0vzzysmu9umcrel4hpgflg4vnsytyxwuqt8la9y nostr:npub1fk8h6g8zhftw8c7pga2zjd84p2z949up5lc3qdchm9v4m0q7mwws7jcwld

Prussia, Imperial China, and post WWII Japan got rich with big government, but most powers started lean and expanded later.

No. They all collapse when they monkey money when they can't expand fast enough to meet centralized demand.

Prussia, Germany 1871-1914

Norway I guess, but they got rich off the back of North Sea Oil. I also wouldn't call Norway "wildly successful". Just a country that seems to be able to afford its generous social spending programs - one of the few.
