Are there any historical examples of a country with a large, centralized government and high taxes, that *became* wildly successful/rich/powerful? As opposed to a successful country that began raising taxes and blowing its bureaucracy?

(I think I know the answer, but I’m trying to steel-man the position).

Also, some great philosophy here, nostr:npub1ndketdm2qyv35nrhsxzks8kh7w7w6tll4rjp29hv0qjqkgfjsh6snmgk2v nostr:npub1jt97tpsul3fp8hvf7zn0vzzysmu9umcrel4hpgflg4vnsytyxwuqt8la9y nostr:npub1fk8h6g8zhftw8c7pga2zjd84p2z949up5lc3qdchm9v4m0q7mwws7jcwld

Prussia, Imperial China, and post WWII Japan got rich with big government, but most powers started lean and expanded later.
