Whatever you think of the president who released Ross, this is a momental win for all of us, and especially for a family and a man who never lost hope. nostr:note1830n3vwnz9hka6shdl79u0t3apjwzreq404uk99kqnagrlf9zc4sd72r40

I don't think he should have gotten a life sentence, and I'm glad he's out, but the lionizing and over the top hero worship is a bit out of hand. People are acting like he invented oxygen, and was falsely imprisoned when the fact is he was imprisoned for money laundering and conspiracy to traffic narcotics. He was found guilty by a jury of his peers, sentenced by an impartial judge, and he lost his appeal. Some of these posts I'm seeing are absolutely ridiculous, whitewashing the facts, and revising history to justify treating him like Jesus.

Did you read the sentencing transcript? It shows just how harshly our laws are applied with respect to drugs. It is terrible that some people overdosed, and I don’t excuse his role in that, however these people would have found other ways to obtain these substances, likely at great risk. The fact that no single dealer who used Silk Road served as severe a sentence shows the disparity. Two life sentences plus 40 years is ridiculous when you realize the kinds of people who are released back into society for truly heinous crimes and then continue to harm others.

Your argument is with the state of our drug laws. It says nothing of the fact that he was charged and sentenced under current law. The fact that you disagree with that law is not an justification for the hero worship of this one individual. Nostr has become a mecca for Ross worship, and I don't think that's a positive development. As I said, I think the sentence was overly harsh and I'm glad he's out, but the glorification and singular focus on this guy is absurd. I haven't even been as active here in the past few days because of the over the top celebrations and myth making that has seemingly taken over Nostr. It's depressing because this is the only social media I use, and it feels like it's becoming a cult platform.

You, sir, are being a wet blanket. That is your right. But allow the community to have their celebration. It’s been 12 years. This is more than just a symbolic victory.
