I guess I never thought about that but I have now.

The story of soldiers waiting in line for Chanel #5 is pretty cool. It kind of reminded me of that visual.

My dad used to take international folks visiting on trips to the mall from Germany and russia and all they wanted to do was blow money on shoes and jeans.

He worked for a pharmaceutical company in IT so it was totally orthogonal to their purpose and my dad could not have given a shit about clothes at anytime. He wore wool/twead suits well after they were in fashion.
