School is run by government. Religion is private. You can just not show up to church and nothing else happens.

Yeah, was about to say. Big difference.
People voluntarily continue to follow their religion, they have an option. The reasons people stick are why religion is important to many, like myself.
When church possesed the government, during the middle age, that was not true.
