I think running your own personal relay is a great way to control your own backup of all your events.

For me personally, I don’t want a backup of all my events at all and wouldn’t care if they all disappeared tomorrow. I’m more concerned about maintaining my reach and ability to see the content I care about.

What are some other good reason to run your own personal private relay?

Maybe you could adjust the config to automatically delete historical content after a set period of time.

Sure, you could. But then what’s the point of running it at all? Short term backup?

Yeah set it to delete events every 3 months or so.

Or rather certain event types. You'd obviusoly want to maintain your following any persistent content such as blog articles, long threads, etc.

The purpose is what then?

If I get censored and have all my events deleted from every other relay I’m on then I can republish them from my backup?

I mostly care about what I’m going to say next on nostr not what I said 3 months ago.

I don't know just spit-balling here. Could be completely off base. I also would like the ability to have some things forgotten over time. For example the typos I just made in this thread.

Hahaha 100%. I have several. Even one in the original post. Not trying to argue for no reason just trying to come up with non event backup reasons to run a personal relay.

All good. Thought provoking discussion!

You could run your own filter relay that hides behind a VPN or other network and pulls down notes from other relays. Then your clients could connect to your personalized filter relay from anywhere and you know your IP and location are private from all the other relays.

True! This is a cool use case but if you start pulling from/broadcasting to too many relays this becomes a technical and resource challenge (and we’d know!)

A private relay could be used to send private DMs between the family members using nostr, without leaking the metadata publicly.

There are more systems to do that, I know (i.e. private matrix server), but a nostr private relay looks so easy to set and maintain.

I’m leaning more towards using Keet for things like this. Seems better across the board or am I missing something.

I haven't tested Keet yet, sorry.

It looks much easier to set, as it's just installing an app, right?

Don't know how fluid it works on mobile, though. Is it a good user experience?

It’s a work in progress right now but it’s extremely promising. Definitely give it a try on mobile/desktop.
