I'm of the mind the the success of centuries of arranged marriages wasn't so much founded on parental abilities to pick just right, but the virtues of perseverence, humility, patience, wisdom, gratitude, and perhaps others, which got people out of the mindset of "are YOU really the best one for me?"

There's something to be said for being selective but I think overemphasis on it removes a ton of responsibility from the equation.
