AI is going to make in person education a lot more popular. Don’t believe me? Here is the conundrum I was pondering this morning.

There is this book that I want my kids to read and really, really ponder. But how can I be sure that they do that? They are clever people who have access to ChatGPT!

I can give the book to them and asked them if they read it and they will say “sure Mom, I read it.” I can ask them to write a book report for me and they will spend 2 mins getting ChatGPT to write a report and email it to me. Okay, I can ask them to hand write the report for me. They will hand write the report that ChatGPT created which will take them 20mins and maybe they will absorb ~2% of the knowledge of the book in that process.

The only way I can be sure that they have read and really thought about the book, is to ask them to go on a walk with me and give me all their thoughts on the book as we walk.

Post AI, tests will have to be in-person conversations.

I, for one, really welcome the change. I remember that during my university studies I was really frustrated with all those standardized tests, but really liked oral exams. Less objective, true, but in the end more conducive to real understanding instead of just remembering stuff.
