How come more clients don’t show wallet balances? It works with Alby, not sure if it works with generic NWC? Should, right?

Depends on NWC implementation. Umbrel self hosted works perfectly. nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg should soon allow that also, and maybe getcurrent.io as well. Don't know any other NWC implementation. nostr:npub1gp4xzpmluelsakjtayc4wtzj97fhj5kakqjvsannu00xkdlf4x8s0xdqyq will also support lndhub soon.
