LibreOffice (for linux, if that matters) is dumb. You can save an epub file, but it will not open one without crashing. (On my system, with my installed version.)

Epubs are fantastic and I cannot wait for them to supplant PDFs as the ubiquitous mode of document format. More compact than even plain text, native reflow of text (if saved that way) and other dynamic formatting out of the box, all in an open source package that just ticks all the boxes.

You can just make something a PDF file and read it using a PDF reader (I like using Zathura or Evince on Linux).

Also, for that nonsense, it looks like either a Fresh or Still issue that needs to be fixed for your OS. I'd imagine it'll work just fine on CachyOS (my current daily driver).

I am avoiding creating new PDFs as much as possible. I now always ask people what format they would prefer, and I've gotten a few people interested enough to give an epub a try.

You may very well be correct about that. 🤔

why do pdfs suck?

Closed source, not as compact, and they expire, sort of. Adobe owns the IP and has obsoleted earlier versions, from what I recall. One of the features of epubs is compatibility, if memory serves. Better for digital archives.

interesting.

pdfs are so common nowadays i forgot they are adobe's lol

That's intentional. I never forget. I'm also old enough to remember how things were in before times.

paper..?

And pre-pdf ubiquity.

for some reason i thought we were closer in age :P

Who knows.

well, i'm a late bloomer anyway ;3

They also don't render nicely for mobile resolution

Exactly so.

I like Calibre for epub saving/editing

Libreoffice isnt a good choise for epub.

Using libreoffice for epubs is dumb 😅
