just came back from my first time at a Mass

i understood very little that was said but i decided that i have to learn the portuguese form of The Lord's Prayer so i understand it and so i can recite it...

there was many things that were said by the congregation so i think there is lots of stuff to learn, and undoubtedly i need to continue my portuguese study

the best part was at the end, after shaking hands with all of the people in the pews near me, and taking the communion wafer, as we were leaving the building to the right the sun had just popped over the edge of the mountain and shined on me

definitely going next week

Beautiful! Look for “The order of the mass” online to see the elements of the mass. Check the hymnal in the pew for the readings and prayers of the priest etc.

Bitcoin and the mass have a lot of overlap on a Ven Diagram.✌️✝️

nostr:npub1l5sga6xg72phsz5422ykujprejwud075ggrr3z2hwyrfgr7eylqstegx9z gave me a good link to a text with side-by-side the text in portuguese and english , i also put the portuguese and latin Pai Nosso in the back of my KJV so i can refer to it and memorise it

there didn't seem to be a mass book thing as there is in some churches, but i have a version i can follow now

the warm sunshine over the mountain as i left was so perfect... also the thing of shaking hands with my neighbours, some of who were literally my actual neighbours... it was very nice

i get what it's about now and how it is so fundamental to the social fabric here

IYKYK!

The best thing to do, is to introduce yourself to the priest. They often have groups for new members, to learn the background information. They call it RCIA, in America.

That was me, sorry.

i wouldn't have a clue about that... i never see anyone in the church even though it's open most of the daylight hours through the week, and very little signage signifying anything

might be a bit different here out in the boonies of madeira, this is definitely a poor area

i will be sniffing around though, i'm sure there is something to look at, perhaps i need to go poke around at the town library and community center also, the "casa do povo"

I usually just jump them after Mass, but I'm rude. 😅

well, i have a language barrier and i'm timid in the best of cases without that as well

someone has to jump me for anything to happen... i felt like there was some kinda vibe around me of like "new person, we know this guy from around but here he is" but they probably none of them can speak good english, was kinda funny actually because the people near me down the back left i knew were all neighbours from this area, and yeah, mostly farmers...

i will persist, anyhows, something will come up... having the plan of the text of the procedure will help me a lot with understanding it anyway

If you're further out, then the priest probably lives someplace else and just stops by to hold Mass and has his office someplace else.

The newbie lessons are usually someplace bigger, that's true.

I really like this book for Portuguese. this was the best language book for my style of learning (reading/some writing and background explanations of quirks)

madeira portugese is not even quite the same as continental, and brazillian is very different

fortunately the lessons i have (pimsleur) cover some of the quirks of madeira portuguese, it's mostly continental, but some fairly different idioms around common things
