I'm more in favor of legalizing all drugs and killing the monetary incentive, but this isn't the worst use of military force. The cartels are awful and most Mexicans probably don't want to live that way. They also stir up trouble here.

drugs aren't anymore the main income of cartels, at least in mexico they moved recently to trafficking energy, mostly stolen oil (known as "huachicol"). sinaloa cartel might as well be the last 'genuine' mexican cartel, so for it's said jalisco's has lots of foreign influence. figures, the us saying we might as well take them instead of letting a rival nation do it first...
