GM Maria2k! Here, my pecan grove is shared by a herd of 27 horses who love them some pecans. Once the storms blow them down, we have to hustle to get in there before the horses eat ‘em all. Once they are wet, on the ground, they have a small window where they’re still viable

Rescued polo ponies do. October is when the groves around here are ripe. Usually storms come through and knock a lot of the fruit onto the pasture.

Yes. At this time of year I wouldn’t want any pecans anyway. But, when we pick in October, we have the horses nosing around in our buckets. Horses aren’t as dumb as folks say; they would much rather nose through the 5 gallon bucket of good pecans you have spent all back-breaking afternoon in the sun picking through pasture pecan groves (with hella horse patties) for good pecans.
