First rabbit harvest of the season in the rabbit colony cannabis garden. A small one at just over two and a half pounds. Rabbits are quick and easy to process and they turn just about any vegetation into meat. Much easier to be self sufficient with than broiler chickens in my opinion.

We save the pelts of these silver fox rabbits, waiting to find time to make something with them. The fur is so soft and delicate. We have traded them with other homesteaders in the past but for now we store them up in the freezer until we need space. Then we pickle them to preserve them and store them in a big bin.

The dog gets the heads and guts. Such a nutritious meal and saves us on dog food too. She has also developed a taste for rabbit which is helpful because now she really likes hunting wild rabbits. This protects our gardens and fruit trees from the little nibblers.

I think it's cool that you do it on your own. Well deserved meat 🥩. My grandparents still do it too. When I was younger I wanted to do it also, helped sometimes, but now I don’t want to eat animal products anymore.😵‍💫

How long have you been slaughtering? How did it feel to kill your first animal?

Started with chickens in 2018. At first it was uncomfortable slaughtering because I wasn't sure if I would do it well and cause the animal to suffer. Now that I have some experience it feels like harvesting anything else. Just another step in the process of growing food. Definitely the lest enjoyable part of the process though.
