First rabbit harvest of the season in the rabbit colony cannabis garden. A small one at just over two and a half pounds. Rabbits are quick and easy to process and they turn just about any vegetation into meat. Much easier to be self sufficient with than broiler chickens in my opinion.

We save the pelts of these silver fox rabbits, waiting to find time to make something with them. The fur is so soft and delicate. We have traded them with other homesteaders in the past but for now we store them up in the freezer until we need space. Then we pickle them to preserve them and store them in a big bin.

The dog gets the heads and guts. Such a nutritious meal and saves us on dog food too. She has also developed a taste for rabbit which is helpful because now she really likes hunting wild rabbits. This protects our gardens and fruit trees from the little nibblers.

Awesome! We also have pelts in the freezer just waiting for time

I think it's cool that you do it on your own. Well deserved meat 🥩. My grandparents still do it too. When I was younger I wanted to do it also, helped sometimes, but now I don’t want to eat animal products anymore.😵‍💫

How long have you been slaughtering? How did it feel to kill your first animal?

Started with chickens in 2018. At first it was uncomfortable slaughtering because I wasn't sure if I would do it well and cause the animal to suffer. Now that I have some experience it feels like harvesting anything else. Just another step in the process of growing food. Definitely the lest enjoyable part of the process though.

Yes! A neat thing about rabbits is they have similar digestive systems to multi-stomach animals like cows.

However, the way they achieve this is the kind of thing an 8 year old boy would find hilarious... 😂

It could be me. 🤣🤣🤣😵💀

The only problem would be if you were carnivore and exclusively eating rabbits. Rabbit starvation is a thing because of how lean they are.

Same with caribou

That's why we have chickens for eggs and lamb for meat too. Soon we will stock our pond with bluegill and bass and well. We get some venison during the winter too. We just found the rabbits to be a better fit for our style than broilers. We have lots of weeds to pull and plants to prune. Much better turning it into meat rather than compost. The feeding them the extra cannabis we grow is an added bonus.

Sounds like you have it dialed. That’s awesome.

Never had the chance of having rabbit. I've heard it's great, gamy, but thats the challenge to work with I guess.

These rabbits are not gamey like wild ones because we control their diet. One of the cool things about feeding them cannabis is that the CBD gets stored in their fat so when we eat then we also get some CBD too.

Rabbit liver is the best 👌

Haven't been saving them but I know I should be. We have plenty of lamb liver so we let the dog eat all the rabbits organs. Liver and hearts are definitely big enough to be worth taking and saving up a bunch.

Second rabbit of the season is ready for some seasoning! A little closer to what we're looking for at 3lb.

Cut the belly out to save up a bunch and make jerky with a Bitcoin mining dehydrator. Probably won't have enough for a batch until the end of summer. Low time preference jerky.

Looking good! What are you going to make with it?

Last one we made tacos, this one who knows... It's going to be cold and rainy this week so maybe ramen sounds good.

Yum! My favorite cold weather meals with it is pot pie and rabbit & dumplings

Yum! I hope you share a photo next time you make it! Definitely want to imagine eating that.

Will do!
