I've been really tempted to start up my own server to run my own nodes, to run NextCloud, etc.

Start9 seems like a solid option, but ordering from North America and shipping here to Asia sounds like a headache. Especially considering customs charges and hold-ups by domestic post.

I know that Start9 has their own guides online, but I'm curious to hear from those that have used their OS themselves. Have any of you techie nostriches managed to set the OS up on your own hardware? What has your experience been?

If possible, I'm leaning towards using a humble mini-PC to install the OS and designating an external SSD (maybe 6TB or so) as the storage option. Anyone know if this would work decently well?

I set it up on a mini PC. It is comically easy. You really don't have to worry.

True👆

I run mine off a raspberry pi. Works well when I just run bitcoin and lightning node only.

I'm displaying my technical ignorance here, but is there any reason having 2-3 other things (such as Nextcloud) running simultaneously with your nodes would cause any problems?

Some of them do. Nexcloud is not too resource intensive and the same for running a nostr relay. I face the most issues when running electrum server.

Running nextcloud on a raspberry pi should not cause alot of disturbance as long as you have really good internet bandwidth. I'll be making an investment in a beefier set up soon tho. Its worth it!
