I think things have always been like this the only difference is that now it's more in the open.
Previously before the internet and things like nostr the government needed to control only mainstream media which was easy now with independent content creators this is a lot more difficult to do.
So the more freedom of information and freedom of speech there is more and more totalitarian measures are needed by the governments to maintain control of the narrative.
In other words, they are losing control. They will become more desperate like a doge backed into a corner and we know what happens.
We've been watching them for centuries and bringing them to this moment in time. They didn't set the stage, we did.

True. But they never did anything quite like this. I remember the Gulf War though, how people were cheering on even in Sweden, and the absurd propaganda from CNN on Swedish television.
