Running a private instance of searx was one of my best decisions lately.

I misjudged searx before since I just tried public instances that keep getting rate limited.

Private searx works really well. It's fast, the results as uncensored as they get. The search syntax is also intuitive and you can use DDG bangs which I love and use all the time.

Off the top of my head, not really. I did spend some time configuring what sources I'm pulling from though.

When I say searx, I really mean searxng. I just didn't want to make the note more obscure since the searx name is more recognized.

You can start small and do incremental steps. searxng is really lightweight and so is whoogle. No need for beefy servers just for that!
