Haven’t read the article yet, but running your on Nostr relay can be dangerous.

At home relay is likely not the way.

Really, only international non KYC’d relays make sense.

I’d like to hear from the community though.

Thoughts? nostr:note17yxx7avaxfjlw7yvdtzysdgshfmhsqttusep2w30r9p27qjcc67q4l9ckk

Seems the seizure was a kind of collateral damage as the raid was based on an unrelated issue. It does though bring up questions about self running relays.

Very much so.

Collateral damage or not, it’s exactly what the cops/Feds/etc will use against you.

“Your honor, we did a search for X but in the process of that legal search we found Y, and we’d like to add 15 more charges to this case.”

It can and will happen.

Yea, I've had some of that floating around in my mind after the influx of some of the less savoury explicit material. Perfect excuse for the man to justify a seizure of equipment.

Seizure of equipment and seizure of your sovereignty.

Here's a discussion thread that brings up some relevant points/arguments

https://monyet.cc/post/147628

A lot of lemmy users in that thread!

the whole system needs to be redone.

NIP-01 wasn't clean enough when it started. the structure isn't right yet. But people can build clients, but there's a lot of fixing to do.

we may have to start from scratch.

What most don't understand is that decentralised comes with an enormous price. Your security model goes to hell if you don't control it, and there is also a majestic misunderstanding that it is not traceable. Some are even claiming it implies anonymity.

It’s all traceable, yeah?

From that monyet thread I'm seeing good discussion about the importance of encryption. To be honest a lot goes over my head but I wonder if a simple explanation could be of use to some of the relay operators whether they are the bigger paid ones or the self hosted relays that some people are running. So a question I would ask is should and how can a relay operator encrypt data on their server.

The depth of traceability extends to levels that you can't imagine.

Network modelling, habits, content posted, pictures, timing, etc.

And all this comes without including that people running a relay might not be that bright. And even then, if I were a malicious actor, I would take down silently a few relays and replace them with mine.

Scary stuff.

They likely know everyone.

Can probably tell by what is searched and then posted seconds later.

Also, I have a question.

When you need to cover a part of your life for any reason that might relate to private, intimate areas or because you have illegal behaviours, the last thing you need is to show off what you do. Correct?

Hence shitposting over a decentralised platform shouldn't be your goal.

The only reason is the data correlation and the ability to express yourself freely. Because that's a bitch.

But here, tracing people to a rl identity is a task for noobs. People post pictures of themselves, they relate to online activities on other platforms, they post pictures of their surroundings, links to their work, to their code, to their whatever. So the only consequence of such a platform is that your data is scattered into amatorial shady servers that can be violated any other second by authorities or criminals.

Not that great, considering that all this adds up to castrated functionality and bad user experience

#kyc #fediverse #mastedon #cloud I just did a quick read of the article and one thing stuck out:

"Most users are unaware that, in general, once the government lawfully collects information, under various legal doctrines they can and do use it for investigating and prosecuting crimes that have nothing to do with the original purpose of the seizure."

REMEMBER THE CLOUD IS JUST SOMEONE ELSES COMPUTER.

Just like if police officers show up to your door and knock, you are under no obligation to open the door. You can talk (or yell) through the closed door. Without a warrant don’t let them in.

If you let them in and talk to them, any thing they see (or smell) can become evidence and allow your your arrest.
