I think the immediate concern is that github, under pressure from governments, could take down the bitcoin core repo

There's technically already a "decentralised" git
It just happens to be running over Ethereum and IPFS lol.
Would be funny to fork a copy of BTC core onto it.
Does that mean Bitcoin itself is at the mercy of Microsoft if the Bitcoin Core repo is on Github?
no I’m sure a lot of people regularly back up the repo. You can do so yourself periodically if you like. It would just be inconvenient and cause a lot of confusion for awhile if they censored it
