You will be able to run your own personal datastore, but no one will connect to it. Everybody will just connect to the big server ran by the Bluesky company that will censor you if you don't go through their KYC process of if you say anything they don't like. They are for freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach (their words).

Mastodon and Bluesky are just glorified centralized social networks. Way less centralized than the big ones but still way too centralized
Sounds censorship resistant to me :')
Bluesky sounds like bluewaffle and I'm not falling for it.
I was one of the first on the Bluesky mailing list to be invited on launch. They they started launching! And... if you where not in the cool kidz clubb of twitter you where not allowed in. Nostr caught my momentum in the interim, and one year later I got my Bluesky invite lol. Garbage system xD
noste won my heart, soul & dev skills 😜
Nostr offers absolutely nothing more. Not without Pkarr. In fact Bluesky offers more because they have relays for reach just like nostr, but behind that there are datastores that are still useful on their own just like web servers, in applications that don't need a timeline or search.
This is a bad argument.
This is like saying you can run a web server but search engines are the gate keepers for reach... well Duh! Nostr is even worse it flattens the whole web into the search layer, there is no durable data hosting layer and there is no routing layer!!
Bluesky's worst problem is that their routing is centralized, but that is one Pkarr away from being fixed.
Search and discovery can't be decentralized, no sense blaming them for that, not until you offer an alternative, Nostr doesn't.
Will this be much different on Nostr tho? Won't everyone on Nostr just go where the biggest relay (or biggest/best client-with-own-relay) is. Already most people connect to the same 3 well known relays.
What will you say is the biggest barrier to adoption & the kind of network effects centralized platforms have?
I'm a bit more positive, honestly AT and Nostr are somewhat similar except with "crawler" layer instead of local clients. If they actually open it up to federalization/decentralization, and especially if it's bridged to here and activity pub, it could be a great thing for everyone.
I used BlueSky since February 2023 until February 2024, I had 5 invite codes but I still deleted my account. I have been a Google Beta Developer for more than 20 years and I had never tested a platform that is so dangerous and extreme.
