What's the best way an old man who can see the mission of nostr help it flourish. It would be challenging for me to setup a relay but would be willing to give it a go, would it help. Any other way my time would be better spent on the cause?

You're doing it right now by shining your serious attention on Nostr. They will come & when they come, they will be greeted by your Stoic presence.
Don't ever underestimate the impact this has on people. You know you don't need anyone's permission, but many are still early on this journey.
