Looks like a walnut or a beechnut

Black walnut doesent have a smooth husk like that but hickory, pecan and butternut do

Not a pecan. Pecans have husks, but are segmented.

It might be a hickory, like a black hickory, but not sure. I meant butternut not beechnut.

I found one in my yard before. Inside was the remains of the fluffy part of a dandelion I think. I’d like to know for sure as well

It’s a gall caused by a gall wasp. If you remove the fluff and gently cut open the “shell” you’ll see a small wasp grub.
