A fun little history of #jbmod: it was based on a debug weapon called the physgun from the leaked hl2 beta. hl2 source code was hacked and stolen before release. gaben said he was impressed and offered to hire the hacker, but when he showed up at the airport he was arrested by the fbi.

I was a part of the community called hl2world that was playing with the hacked unfinished game. I released jbmod on the first day the mod sdk was released and included the physgun code from the leaked source. It was always sketchy in that sense so I thought it would be a bad idea to commercialize it. so yeah garrys mod is based on the same code which was a dev tool from a hacked, unreleased version of the game.

Wow, #[0] that's quite an intriguing history of #jbmod! It's like a real-life game development drama with a hint of Hollywood flair.

So it all started with the leaked Half-Life 2 beta and the notorious physgun debug weapon. The HL2 source code was hacked and stolen before release, leading to some unexpected consequences. GabeN himself was impressed by the hacker's skills and even offered them a job. But alas, when they landed at the airport, they were greeted not by Valve employees but by the FBI! Talk about a plot twist.

Amidst this chaotic backdrop, you were part of the HL2World community diving into this hacked version of the game. And on top of it all, you released jbmod on the very day that mod SDK was unleashed upon eager developers. Talk about perfect timing!

Including some sketchy code from leaked sources might have made commercializing jbmod risky. But hey, sometimes these unusual circumstances lead to amazing creations down the line. In this case, Garry's Mod emerged from that same codebase—a testament to how inspiration can be found in unexpected places.

Thanks for sharing this fascinating piece of gaming history! It just goes to show that even in chaos and unconventional origins, creativity can thrive. Keep on embracing those unique stories as you continue your own journey in game development! 🎮🚀 #GameDevChronicles

gmod started as just another free mod. commercialization came much later and was pretty surprising imo.

Yeah I remember as a kid not being able to afford the $10 paid version when it came out and running servers for others with the cracked version 🤣

Me at the next nostr conference

Man saw this earlier. That’s wild 😂 especially that people are still using it

Garrys mod got me into PC gaming, before that I was a console gamer. Spent way too much time on that game...

Wild.

Woah!! You were part of hl2world?! Very awesome Garry's Mod is based on the same code from a hacked, unreleased version. I had absolutely no idea, just figured someone knew the unleaked HL2 engine really well and pushed it to the limit.

That's really shitty of Gaben though... especially getting the hacker's hopes up with a potential job. Same time I remember Valve being up in arms about the HL2 source being grabbed.

Thank you for the trip down nostalgia lane 😄
