Was the same stuff in 1997 too (& the 2000s) & it was always gross. I genuinely thought everything served in all the cafeterias at all the schools I ever attended looked & smelled like vomit. I brought my own lunch every day of school for all 13 years & ate outside of the lunchroom whenever possible. Never understood how people could eat the cafeteria food. Just smelling it was bad enough IMO.

Not everyone can afford food to bring from home. I grew up with reduced price school lunches. Agree that all the food sucked. But Pizza Friday in grade school was something to look forward to.

Growing up in Poland in the 90s and early 2000s, the school canteen food was usually quite tasty, the kind you'd get at home cooked by your mum or granny, I wonder what it's like now.

But anyway, the state should not be responsibly for feeding anyone, especially not children. They fuck everything up, the US example above being a case in point
