Does it produce more energy or does it just make you feel less tired?

It’s a diuretic so you’re peeing some out too

If you have proper thyroid function and thiamine status coffee promotes more energy.

If you don't, coffee makes you wired, shaky, or anxious. Over time you'll feel trapped and wish you could quit.

A lot of people in the second camp, of which mineral and nutrient deficiency is the cause.
