Hahaha, the official Russian press is already calling Assad the "former president of Syria." They dropped him on a diplomatic level pretty quickly. Well, at least he's still alive, and that's something.

isn't it interesting that Assad fled to Moscow and not Tehran ?

I didn't expect anything else
when i told my mother this morning that Assad fled she replied " To Russia ? "
so certainly not a surprising choice, and yet considering Assad is a Muslim from the Middle East - why didn't he choose some Muslim country in the Middle East instead ?
i think it's a question worth asking ...

Iran will be destroyed next, there’s no point in running there now.
the other issue is his presence may be destabilizing in Middle East and thus not wanted
in Russia he is basically put out to pasture
I've always seen Syria as closer to Russia than Iran. Russia (had) military bases there and was fighting to defend the Assad government, Iran was more of "moral support" from a distance. Iran shipped weapons through Syria into Lebanon, but that wasn't for Syria's benefit. Was Assad a muslim? I thought he was secular. And while he is Arabic, Iran isn't (it's Aryan). Anyhow I don't see it as odd. So AFAIK Iran is neither his race nor his religion nor his closest ally.
yeah good points. i also just realized both Bashar and Putin became presidents the same year ( 2000 ).
