It uses web socket connections from client to relays as its transport layer

Well. It still uses TCP, but it uses web sockets as an alternative to http.

TCP still happens for the initial hand shake to negotiate between the relay and client, but then opens a bi directional channel.
Where pure TCP is a request/ response channel. They go one way and bounce back and forth.
