Not sure if I get you point but while I think that Mustang is pure piece of art I’d love to have in my garage and drive from time to time, I still remember what a great machine that first Focus was. No other hatchback rode like that. Steering, suspension was perfect. It was done as European cars are done. Note, you Americans, Europe is so small that we have to have a lot of corners and Focus could do that perfectly. It was Car with capital C.

The focus platform was Ford's C1 "global" platform designed in Cologne.
It was shared by Ford, Mazda, and Volvo for multiple vehicles in each make's lineup (2003-2023).
Yes. Some good cars on thic C platform.
The key was independent rear suspension which made Focus turn so nicely. Its competitors mostly had torsion beam axle which is less complicated, cheaper and shitty.
My experience is specifically within the US.
Aside from VW, the majority of rear beam vehicles have been the entry cost economy vehicles and minivans.
Most are some form of multi-link independent rear.
What made the c1 work was the 10 link, passive rear steer system. (Albeit problematic over time in climates that are hard on elastomer bushings,. The Sonora desert and the Mojave, for example.)
