LPVO (Low Powered Variable Optic) or Red Dot, now that is the question. LPVOs are typically better for Recce-style rifles that will see a mixture of field and urban environments. They are also great for hunting.

Red Dots on the other hand cannot be beat for urban environments, where every half second matters.

I typically recommend an LPVO on your first AR, with a 16in or 18in barrel. Once you have that, an 11in or 14.5in AR with a Red Dot is an excellent choice for the house.
