Friday buy day. Time to buy a new gun! After you get your first AR and 9mm handgun, you may want to consider a 7.62x39 AK. This is one of the most common calibers on the face of the planet and when shit gets crazy, you need to be able to shoot the ammo you can find.

Let's talk DMRs (Designated Marksman Rifle) or their related cousin, the Recce Rifle. Essentially, the idea is to have a versatile rifle that is designed primarily for the field, but can also handle urban environments and dense wooded areas.

The main facets of these rifles are a scope (as opposed to a red dot), a +16in barrel, and often a suppressor. The ideal caliber for one of these rifles is 5.56 or something in that realm that is light enough to carry longer distances (as opposed to a 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor). These rifles also typically make great hunting rifles for small to medium-sized game.

Well, drawing is part of the training that would come in handy here. Ultimately though, you shouldn't draw a gun that you aren't prepared to use. If the other guy has a gun, he may shoot first. If he has a knife, he may charge you.

You might be better off not carrying if you don't train some. I think of it like a life insurance policy, you pay premiums every year. Training is like that, you need to put in the time and money to do it regular enough that it's actually effective when you need it.

It's easy to get wrapped up in collecting the latest weapons, attachments, and gear; however, if you don't train regularly, none of it is any good. It's rarely fun to train, but it's critically important. Not only do you need to know how to shoot, but you need to know how to operate under pressure. When you go to the range, don't just shoot from the bench rest. Get a tactical bay, shoot while standing, move and shoot, engage multiple targets, do reload drills, etc.

Happy Saturday Notriches! If you have a chance, get outside today and enjoy the great outdoors. Even better if you get a chance to get some time in behind your rifle or handgun. 🌲

Two is better than one. Two is one and one is none. It takes two to tango. A gun in the hand is worth two in the bush. πŸ˜„

Suppressed handguns are some of the best suppressed weapons. The reason is that handgun rounds are subsonic or can easily be subsonic without losing too much power. Subsonic rounds are the perfect match for a suppressor as they eliminate the muzzle flash, muzzle crack, AND the downrange crack. Rifle calibers typically rely on speed to deliver significant kinetic energy at the target, so reducing that speed meaningfully reduces the effectiveness of rifle rounds, but fast, supersonic rounds create a sonic crack downrange, which reduces the effectiveness of a suppressor. Common handgun calibers do not suffer from this same issue as they typically rely on mass instead of speed to deliver energy, and are thus the perfect mate for a suppressor.

AR Pistol/SBR vs pistol caliber SMG. For a long time, the preferred CQB/Urban weapon was an SMG, whether it was the original Tommy Gun/Thompson or the German MP40. However, with the proliferation of body armor, the need for strong rounds has arisen. The military experimented with AP calibers like the FN 5.7 (the P90) or the HK 4.6 (the MP7), but ultimately, it was easier to just add a shorter barrel to your AR and use standard 5.56 ammo that is armor piercing out of the box.

Some people get excited about larger magazines. 40 rds, 100 rds, 250 rds, drum magazines, etc. The original M16A1 used a 20 rd magazine, but was upgraded to a 30 rd magazine, and that has become the standard. Although a larger magazine seems like a good idea, there's a tradeoff between weight and reload frequency. Too much weight attached to the rifle itself makes the rifle heavier to carry and tougher to maneuver. 30 rd mags have become the standard, partly because they strike this balance well, although for AR10s (typically with heavier rounds), 20 rd mags are typically preferred.

In all seriousness, it's important that you do some basic training with anyone living in your house. If shit gets crazy, whether it's a simple home invasion or something worse, you want to have a preset plan and know how to work together.

Maybe the plan is, "Kids, go hid in the closet in your bedroom. Don't come out until I come get you." Maybe the plan is, "Babe, guard the bedroom door and do not leave while I clear the house." Maybe everyone has a bug out bag with some basic essentials and a pre-defined meeting spot if things collapse quickly. It doesn't have to be a perfect plan, but a plan is better than no plan.

"Fail to plan, plan to fail". You can't afford to fail when your life is on the line.

LPVO (Low Powered Variable Optic) or Red Dot, now that is the question. LPVOs are typically better for Recce-style rifles that will see a mixture of field and urban environments. They are also great for hunting.

Red Dots on the other hand cannot be beat for urban environments, where every half second matters.

I typically recommend an LPVO on your first AR, with a 16in or 18in barrel. Once you have that, an 11in or 14.5in AR with a Red Dot is an excellent choice for the house.

Did you know the average American gun owner owns 8 guns?

Did you also know that there are an estimated 430M privately owned guns in the US, which is more than all of the guns owned by every military in the world, combined. USA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

PV and Happy Monday! πŸ€™

The AR gets all of the love and attention in the West, but in most of the world, an AK variant is all the exists. Given the widespread availability of the 7.62x39mm cartridge, I recommend everyone have at least one AK in their lineup as you start to build beyond your first rifle and handgun.
