Antropofagia, 1929 by Tarsila do Amaral

Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) was an important figure of Brazilian modernism, shaping Brazil's cultural identity in the 1920s. Her oil canvas work “Antropofagia" plays a significant role in the Antropofagia movement, which was a central part of Brazilian modernism. The movement encouraged the concept of "cannibalizing" foreign influences: taking them in, changing them, and reinterpreting them to form a unique Brazilian cultural identity instead of just copying European models. Until April 21, you can explore the works of Brazilian artists from the twentieth century and discover the diversity of Brazilian art during that era at the exhibition "Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism" at the Royal Academy in London.
