My students in China had to shout communist slogans and there were big red signs with slogans in all the classrooms. One time I walked in early and they were all pointing and laughing at the last emperor, as a way of reinforcing communist doctrine. After the national anthem every Monday morning, little girls would stand at the microphone and shriek out Xi Jinping Thinking for a New Communist Era, or whatever it was called, while the whole school stood in formation like in the military. All of my Chinese coworkers were members of the communist party, as required by law (Not me, though).
It was all very encouraging. I'm sure the felt safe and secure.
