Indeed I agree with you, but people who read and are in such circles (independent of the style they usually read) tend to get in a toxic competence with others and they start comparing themselves with others that read X amount of books, as if that meant you have more real world knowledge or anything like that.

I find this counterproductive for people that doesn't read and gets recommended for example a short, reel, tiktok, or YT video with the title of "I read 100 books a year, here's how", and they feel inspired just to find out they will never get to those numbers realistically, as everyone seems to be reading X books I n Y time like it's a race, and therefore they end up not reading again.

ok yes i understand what you mean. scoring the nr of books has zero value. what you get out of them is the benchmark.

i have a family member who reads incredibly much but asking her about even the second to last book is impossible. almost zero recollection of details.
