I want to believe that there is a benefit to having nations, but I struggle to see how, when all those who obtain power eventually abuse it.

Study history. Prussia is a good one.
The Cham people if you’re interested in Asia/religion.
Without a nation, you are going to get runover by someone with a nation.
That's a fair point. I think it was Nietzsche that said "no matter how strong the individual is, the collective is always stronger" (paraphrased)
But I wonder how the Individual can protect themselves from their own government, since historically that's a much higher threat.

By becoming the government.
Sovereign individuals already exist - they have diplomatic passports and the leverage to not have them removed.
I fear that takes us down the hunger games road where we become the evil that we rebelled against, just under a different authoritarian.
But I am hopeful for a sovereign society of individuals that won't surrender their power, money, and energy to a central authority or anyone.
If someone is going to be in charge - do you want it to be a self-selected managerial elite, or do you want it to be your people?
See you’re probably right, but given the choice of being under the yoke or holding the whip, I’ll take holding the whip.
I don't disagree.
Reminds me of the song "natural" by imagine dragons, better to be the hunter than the prey.
I won't yield to any yoke forever, give me liberty or give me death. At least we can hold the whip in defense of our own individual liberty through tools like bitcoin, nostr, and just good ole fashion disobedience.
