my guess is that the reason blowing into it actually "works" is because of the moisture landing on the contact strip, and that loosens the dirt caked on the contacts to be pushed out of the way. I had the NES and the N64 and routinely did this and sometimes accompanied by using cotton tips dipped in alcohol to rub on the edge of it.

Blowing on it worked way better than using alcohol cotton tips for me haha
