What are Bitcoin address formats and where do the differences lie? Explore the world of Bitcoin addresses and their significance for transactions. Legacy, Wrapped-Segwit, Native-Segwit, and Taproot – which address suits your needs? 💰🔍 #Bitcoin #Blockchain

1. #Legacy addresses are the traditional Bitcoin addresses, but compared to other formats, they may incur higher transaction fees. They start with '1' and use Base58Check encoding. Ideal for compatibility but not for fee efficiency.

2. #Wrapped-Segwit addresses combine old and new technologies. They start with '3' and use the P2SH-P2WPKH script standard. Good for compatibility with older wallets but not as fee-efficient as Native-Segwit. #Cryptocurrency.

3. #Native-Segwit addresses offer the lowest transaction fees and improved error detection. They start with 'bc1q' and use the P2WPKH script standard and bech32 encoding. Optimal for cost efficiency and performance.

4. #Taproot addresses, starting with 'bc1p', are still less common but offer improved privacy, performance, and predictable fees. They use the bech32m scheme and the P2TR standard. Futuristic but still in the adoption phase.

Are any of these less secure than the others? There are people who say only the legacy addresses will survive, but I think that's a blocksize war argument from before my time.

I believe advancements like SegWit and Taproot prioritize security and efficiency.

From my understanding SegWit (segregated witness) was a soft fork that could "potentially" be "un-wound" leaving only legacy address holders....

Imagine losing all your bitcoin trying to save fees...

Majority of bitcoin is held in legacy addresses, but I'll bet majority of people here hold nearly all in SegWit.....

Which seems the "most secure" to hold for say 10 years time, do you suppose...? One seems completely compatible, regardless. The other seems less stable....

But that's just like my opinion, man.

Also, not what most people like to hear, lol.

You can still set-up a legacy address/wallet with Electrum, although I believe you have to make an effort.

Komodo Wallet uses legacy addresses by default and also has cool features, like a "Camouflage PIN" that, when entered, shows only a fraction of your balance, so if under duress, you could access and send a small fraction of your actual holdings.... Anyway, worth looking into, as it's also a DEX.

Nunchuk supports legacy wallets too. Seriously considering asking if I can roll my assisted wallet over to one...

I want to say, well so many wallets default to native Segwit and lightning needs it to exist, so how could it possibly get rugged? But what can go wrong will go wrong in a long term play like Bitcoin.

It's another rabbithole, yet again.

Modern wallets use SegWit for the cheaper fees and it's "lighter weight" not having the signatures. How does it rug? Miners drop the soft fork due to an unforseen security issue or who knows???

In another discussion on Nostr, someone told me they feel safest in the latest tech, so they were looking to move their holdings to Taproot, lol.

Everyone has a different thought process.

My thoughts are, safety is THE base layer or the closer the better. I certainly wouldn't be holding my life savings in ⚡, lol.

Must still have some 1 addresses to be OG 😉

I don't have any, but I wish I did 😃
