Anybody running a Raspberry Pi in their vehicle? How does it hold up to the vibration and temperature swings? How are you mounting it?

My Pi 5 just arrived and I am considering putting it in my truck to run WSJT-X and other frivolities.

I've not done it, myself. Let us know how it goes!

Depends what the temperature range is. In moderate climate it should be fine. I would add a battery backup with controlled power down, otherwise it'll be eating SD cards.

It's generally between 20F and 60F here, occasionally down to -20F.

Really? I run some RPi 3s on intermittent solar. They take a while to fsck each boot, but I haven't had any hardware SD card failures.

Raspbian used to set dirty bit and refuse to fsck on boot, so I switched to Debian. Their arm64 support is pretty comprehensive.

In a car, I'd avoid powering a RPi with a LiPo. There are some that handle heat well, but even my Samsung 18650s will go into auto-discharge mode.

Which rechargables take heat and cold well? NiCad? Lead-acid does. LiFePO4?

even lead acid doesn't do well in siberian conditions, cars used in the cold areas must have manual cranks to start them because the batteries produce no charge

i think lithium would be ok but you should add a heat panel and heavy insulation and temperature regulator

they work best if you can keep them always at a perfect 27'C

i had a nightmare in -8'C conditions with an aluminium body sony smart phone back in 2015, it would run to zero in an hour or two - i couldn't get inside and it wasn't warm enough in even my deepest pockets

Nobody here in Alaska has hand cranked cars 🤣, just slightly oversized starting batteries and AC powered block, coolant and/or battery heaters. You really don't need anything special when it's above 10F. Way up north, some guys run Webasto brand diesel drip heaters to keep their trucks warm.

I was planning to run the Pi on a 12V USB converter connected to the starting battery through a switch.

We'll see what happens. If it breaks, I'm only out $60.
