I'm 100% against any form of relay-level filtering, full stop.

A relay is not a server. By definition its only function is to forward traffic and be as dumb as possible.

Clients should just display that traffic, and give users a decent UX with as many OPTIONAL customization and filtering tools as possible. It's not for the clients to decide what to display instead of the user either.

This is the only way

Do u run a relay?

Spin one up and I'll change your mind within one week.

I can fill your relay with 1 TB of spam non-sense and you can pay to store it and bandwidth transfer to so you don't have to censor.

I absolutely delete garbage from my relay and it is truly retarded to spend money to store gibberish

Exactly.

I think, if I run a relay, I can do whatever I want. Worst case, noone will use it only me.

On the other hand, I agree, that Nostr shall be a protocol where the option is given to users what they want to filter, and how.

Using either pubkey PoW or note PoW can get rid of 99.99% of spam with no effort from the relay operator.

Then, when the government comes after you for "hosting illicit content", you will have no cover.

Well put your money where your mouth is and fire up that relay and let's find out :)

I have no interest in running a relay. I've said it before. As long as Nostr remains uncensored I'll use it.

When there are no uncensored relays left to use, I'll just stop using it, like I simply stopped using Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and all those other services.

Social media is not a life necessity by any stretch of the definition. It's completely accessory and can be dropped any time if it becomes a nuisance or a liability for one's life and freedom.

I speak with many relay operators and all of us do censorship.

Nostr is censorship resistant because anyone has the ability to run a relay. Not because relay operators store spam out of a principled stance.

If you are getting censored then you run your own relay and nobody can stop you.

Again, not interested. Too busy. But thanks.

Except most of the censorship on nostr happens on clients, particularly with Amethyst and it’s on by default filters.

But filtering ppl with no follows or followers means new ppl will never be seen, so it’s a bad idea imo.

New people usually follow people no? Isn't that the first thing one does basically?

That won't stop people from creating a bot that follows other instances of itself.

I guess so, but spammers could easily bypass that. I think relays should have some sort of ai filter. If you look at spam posts, it’s all repetitive crypto ads or scams (which you don’t even need ai to detect really) and random gibberish in the case of that guy that’s maliciously spamming.

Nemol already left, so it's back to shitcoin spam.

At least they’re not trying to get on CNBC by being as annoying as possible.

Btw who do you censor and why?

What are you talking about?
