I'm conflicted on this. I like the idea of liberty here, that the woman isn't financially enslaved and is able to escape abusive/harmful domestic situations. My worry is that this assumes divorce as a given at worst or an option always tempting. I might be misreading this though.

You're just forgetting that if she dies, then her kids receive an inheritance directly and immediately from her. If she spends the money, then they get less or nothing from her, and have to worry that their widower father will remarry and have more kids and they get a shrinking part of a smaller pie.
So what? It’s their money.
