my roommate disconnected my start9 node because we got a new router and etc.

It’s still unconnected.

I am unsure in what to do right now as I am away and am afraid that I am going to disrupt some of my connections and channels that I had set up.

I am asking for help in what to do in this situation so I can get everything back online. This is a first for me so any help and guidance is immensely appreciated.

It'll be fine. Mine gets fucked by turning off the power from time to time and it's fine. You just gotta plug it in, log on, and restart any services that look borked. Log into AlbyHub or whatever lightning mode you use specifically too to make sure it's operating, and check the channels. AlbyHub requires a login upon boot, it might be similar upon reconnection to the network after a while, not sure.

Thanks kevin, I appreciate the feedback. Appreciate the reshare to get some more insights on this. Just want to make sure I don’t fuck things up. First time doing this so

The first problem, is you are running a node on Start9.

Easy, yes.

But what if they are compromised?

If you are intent on running a BTC node, then you may want to consider using an older laptop, strictly for this purpose.

Install a Linux distro, and implement the BTC node software.

I prefer Linux Mint. The Bitcoin core is available in the software manager.

Yeah, throw that baby out with the bath water. Good for your health.

Ok. Yes. I am speaking of extremes.

Thanks for the sarcasm 😂

I mean if we put it like that every "centralized" repo could be compromised, even debian or flathub.

Also, probably the user has a node with additional services like electrs, mempool, ln and stuff, so not really that good to use a desktop distro for that.

testing zaps for this note… we made six attempts to⚡zap this note, at npub1zeeyvah2um8fak5n6zwh9fax7c7nhs37ty0t850c0z23tmwljk7smgg9tv@npubx.cash, over a period of 2 minutes. all six attempts were successful. please check on your end to be sure you received. average zap time was 9689ms (9.7 seconds). we consider this zap time slow... generally, zaps should complete in under two seconds. (other nostr users might think your zaps are broken, might not zap you again.) if you wanted to fix this... you could try getting a free rizful lightning address -- https://rizful.com ... if u get it set up, pls reply here so we can do this ⚡zap test again.

From the sound of it he’s also running a lightning node.

Yeah, lightning is cumbersome to handle, even for Bitcoin veterans.

Your channels and connections are certainly disconnected now.

Plug it in and resolve any connectivity issues. Simple.

Cheers

I keep mine on a UPS so when the power is disconnected I have a small battery back up. It also Beeps so a roommate would not forget to plug it back in and it never loses connectivity.

Also, a cool internet fallback option is having a WiFi hotspot next to your server in case the ethernet connection fails you can use that as a back up.

Redundancy is the name of the self-hosting game.

It is possible that your channels are still alive but your counterparty might have closed them after a week of inactivity.

The start9 needs router help with their insistence on having a “local” address. If the new routers domain doesn’t have avahi or bonjour resolving .local domains then it won’t be discoverable.

This alone is why I rolled my own node and ditched their software.

I think it would be discoverable with the IP address. .local isn't strictly required

Step 1: Drown roommate in bathtub. There is no step 2.

wtf

PSA: jokes exist

😂

if it’s disconnected for too long your lightning channels might get closed. then you would have to recover the funds with a channel state backup

That's wrong. You just have to plug it back in and let it sync for a few minutes if anything closed it's still there in your nodes on chain wallet

Yep. See my latest note

Plugging it back in should fix it. These things are more resilient than people give them credit for.

Setting my mini PC to power back on after a power surge is really the only issue I've had with my coming back online.

Yep. Back online

How long are you gone? You should be ok.

Got it fixed. See latest post

Nice 👊⚡️

Just plug back in when you get home you'll be fine

My girlfriend did the same to my umbrellas. Plug it back in. I think they have more chance of going down the longer it stays offline.

Yep got it back. See my latest note
